Breathe Deep Haymarket, a 3K walk & run, was started by volunteer coordinator Heather Busicchia to honor her late grandmother, Vivian J. Whitmer ("Mema"). Vivian was a strong role model for her four children and five grandchildren, a dedicated Christian, an artist, and a musician, and was never shy to voice her opinion. Despite her incredible strength, Vivian passed away of lung cancer on April 26, 2004. Although Heather was only 13 at the time of her grandmother's passing, she made a promise to herself that she would not let Vivian's memory fade... and to help create a world where other families wouldn't have to go through what hers did.
In 2010, tragedy struck Heather's family once again when her grandmother's best friend of over 20 years, Rita Koch, lost her own battle against lung cancer. Rita had been fighting the cancer for three years and had spent several months in remission until it returned just a month before her passing on August 21.
It was at this time that Heather finally realized just how serious lung cancer is - and that anyone can get it. She began researching the specifics of lung cancer and the treatment and detection methods available. This is when she discovered LUNGevity Foundation and, in 2012, she partnered with them to put on the first annual Breathe Deep Haymarket Walk & Run in Memory of Vivian J. Whitmer on April 27, 2013. It is the only event of its kind in Northern Virginia that benefits lung cancer research.
In Breathe Deep Haymarket's first year, we raised over $8,500 for the lung cancer-focused research programs into targeted therapies and early detection methods that LUNGevity funds and we do not intend to stop there.
On April 26, 2014 we will gather at Silver Lake Regional Park for our second annual 3K Walk & Run. However, this year's event will be unlike the rest - it is also the 10th anniversary of Vivian's passing. Please join in the fight to put an end to lung cancer and help us not only celebrate the life and memory of this amazing woman, but of all lung cancer survivors and their loved ones!
There will be certificates for the top two individuals and two teams and awards for the top two individuals.
